A growing trend in the beauty industry is sustainable and eco-friendly products. Sustainability and eco-friendly products have labels such as: no animal testing, natural ingredients, less packaging, recyclable or recycled packaging to name a few.  The 2023 worldwide market for sustainable beauty was worth 181.23 billion and is expected to grow to 285.6 billion by 2030. 

Consumers are becoming more educated every day and it is clear that they want sustainable products that help them lower their environmental impact.  When wanting to buy sustainable products, 45% of consumers chose 100% natural ingredients and cruelty free products.  Followed by environmentally safe ingredients at 39%, responsible packaging was desired by 21-23%. 

While consumers’ main focus appears to be on ingredients, brands and manufacturers are focusing on eco-friendly packaging and waste management. Green Circle Salons estimates up to 877lbs of waste is produced in the beauty industry per minute.  With that knowledge, they have created a waste management system that helps divert 95% of salon waste from the landfill.  Other companies are employing new and old strategies to help mitigate waste and environmental impact such as switching to recyclable packaging like aluminum and glass, having more refillable options and experimenting with post-consumer recycled plastic packaging. 

Will sustainable beauty trends affect my ability to instruct? I do not think so.  It will, however, create opportunities for SDL and collaborative learning in the classroom.
